WW2 - Fallschirmjäger der Wehrmacht - DE

Last cigarette break

Fallschirmjaeger der Wehrmacht

Cold. It is so cold. Deep freezing temperatures and snow. Nobody expected that. The clothes are no longer warm enough. Also no winter camouflage clothing.

The supply convoys can no longer get through. Now the food rations are running out. And the boys have to share the last cigarettes. And worst of all, the enemy never sleeps.

History:

On January 29, 1936, the Wehrmacht's Air Force began recruiting volunteers for the German paratroopers.

The equipment consisted of the M38 paratrooper helmet, Paratrooper Blouse ('Fallschirmschützen-Bluse' or 'Knochensack'), the parachutes of the RZ series (RZ stands for "Rückenfallschirm Zwangsauslösung"), hand grenades, pistol and submachine gun. The paratrooper rifle 42, which was specially developed for the paratroopers, was later introduced. Paratrooper rifle 42 was a combination of a light machine gun and a precision rifle.

The most famous mission of German paratroopers was in Crete. On May 20, 1941, from 8 a.m., German paratroopers landed on Crete. One of the important tasks was to occupy the 'Höhe 107'. This hill lies above the Maleme airfield, which lies west of the city of Chania.

In addition to other troops, three 'Fallschirmjäger-Regimenter' and the 'Luftlande-Sturmregiment' were deployed on Crete, all in all around 11000 well-trained volunteers. A good half of them, some 5500 paratroopers, were wounded or killed in those ten days, most of them in the first two days.
