M113 ACAV

In 1956, the American company Food Machinery Corporation (FMC) was commissioned to develop a successor to the armored infantry vehicle M59. In 1957 the two prototypes T113 and T117 were built. These vehicles were given to the forces for troop testing. The decision a lot on the T113. This had had a newly developed aluminum armor and was thus relatively light. 1960 series production began. The vehicle was named M113.

In the Vietnam War, the M113 was initially used as a pure troop transport. The gunner of the heavy Browning machine gun M2 was not protected by a shield from enemy fire. Only the South Vietnamese army equipped their M113 with shields for the gunner. The first Vietnamese M113 ACAVs appeared in 1963.

ACAV means Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle. The traditional role of the armored infantry vehicle as an "infantry taxi" was abandoned and switched to an armored infantry fighting vehicle. The M113 should no longer be used exclusively to move troops in the combat zone. The M113 ACAV should now actively support the infantry with its weapons in combat.

The Americans adopted the idea of the additional shields. From 1965, the serial production of the M113 ACAV began.
